A typical day in the life of a steel welder/assembler at SBB

  • Read assembly plans.
  • Understand the symbols and welding process used by the CWB.
  • Use the welding methods requested on the plans.
  • Prepare assembly and welding work considering several important factors, including metal properties, the effects of heat and cold, condensation, tolerances, expansion, contraction of metals, etc.
  • Set the welding equipment properly according to the task.
  • Assemble parts using weld points at various specific locations before final welding.
  • Evaluate if the part meets the assembly tolerances and be able to make the necessary corrections.
  • Identify any anomalies related to its welding: porosity, gutters, overflow, etc.
 

The ideal steel welder/assembler has

 

Has the following background:

  • Professionnal degree (DEP) in welding.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in steel welding.
 

And brings the following abilities:

  • Good knowledge of the SMAW, GMAW and FCAW processes.
  • Good understanding of the reaction of metals when faced with heat and cold.
  • Ease of using techniques to immobilize equipment.
  • Ability to weld in all positions.
  • Good manual dexterity and meticulousness.
  • Good ability to produce at a predefined rate.
  • Concern for health and safety rules when using welding equipment.
