General Information

In operation since 1974, SBB has a wide experience in the manufacturing of metal products of all kinds, made to customers’ specifications. In 1994, leveraging our know-how of metal working, we also started designing and manufacturing Emergency Restoration Systems (ERS). ERS are ultra-light modular aluminum structures that can be used to overcome quite a few challenges: Generally, when electrical transmission is interrupted because one or several transmission towers are damaged, there is a high economical cost for the utility company (i.e. penalties for every day of non-transmission). However, there are also high political and social costs to such a situation.^

This represents an opportunity for a quick and efficient solution to temporarily replace damaged towers, until the utility company can remove the damaged tower, build a new foundation, transport the new tower to the site and install it. This process can take as little as 1 or 2 weeks (tower in stock, 24h shifts, efficient teams) or as long as 5 or 6 weeks. By using SBB ERS, the transmission towers can be replaced in just a few hours by creating a by-pass and power transmission will be resumed much faster than with the traditional methods. When the new transmission tower is installed, the SBB towers can be removed as quickly as they were installed and put back in a container until the next use. Our towers are so versatile than they can be used for various applications such as:

  • Restoring power following a disaster (flood, hurricane, war, etc…)
  • Conducting scheduled maintenance work on existing towers without major interruptions
  • Building temporary line extensions in a fast & efficient way (no civil engineering work required)
  • Temporarily linking villages or remote locations (mining sites) to the main grid
  • Serving as meteorological towers in wind energy applications
  • Serving quite a few other purposes (army, site surveillance, etc…)

Technical Information

Advantages of SBB towers

  • The unique profile of the 412 mast section allows it to be easily stacked and stored. All parts fit into one standard size container, thereby eliminating multiple voyages for shipping and the associated high cost.
  • The aluminum design of the tower eliminates any maintenance, and the unique SBB design of the mast section and its components requires low labor. During assembly, standard tools are used to mount the tower sections. All this results in a lower cost of ownership.
  • Better Technology is SBB’s ongoing goal. Our mast sections are light weight, with the most innovative accessories and improved security. We take pride in our constant R&D investments that allows us to break new grounds.
  • With every tower installation, SBB offers a complete training program to give the client a thorough overview of the software and field assembly techniques. At the end of this program, the client will be able to perform configuration validation on the software.
  • Fast response for your emergency needs. The simplicity of the accessories and the versatility of the mast sections allow a 30 meter tower, complete with insulators and anchors, to be erected in 3 hours using a team of only 6 men. Thereby, lowering installation costs.

Training

For every tower installation, SBB provides its clients with a ten day training program, which is an elaborate course designed to provide the client with a thorough understanding of the software and field erection of the tower by its different methods.

The software training course is spread over three days. The program offers an overview of the PLS/Pole and PLS/CADD software that is used for the simulation of the tower and the effects of different applied loads. Clients will have the opportunity to perform exercises to practice validating their configuration for an emergency situation. This course will give our clients the basic knowledge and understanding of the software to be able to perform such validation runs on their own.

The field training program offers the client five full days of practice with the aid of SBB linesmen trainers. Clients will have the opportunity of practicing the different methods of assembling and dismantling the tower. At the end of the course the participants will have the knowledge and experience to carry on the assembly of the modular tower on their own. It is a structured course that tackles all aspects of assembling an SBB tower and all its components that were selected for the client’s configuration.
